4 Ways to Introduce Weather Awareness to Kids

Posted on April 20, 2022 by Ladybug Child Care Center

Great news—The weather is finally getting warmer! Sure, families can have plenty of fun outdoors in the winter, but there’s just something so exciting and invigorating about being outside when the temperatures are higher. However, there is one downside that comes along with Spring and Summer: Inclement weather.

While storms are a completely normal part of the seasons and we’re used to getting them each year, they can be intimidating for little kids. Fortunately, there are things you can do to help your child get accustomed to different weather and become more comfortable with it. Here are a few tips for how to introduce weather awareness to your little bug:

1) Ensure them that stormy weather is a regular aspect of life and teach them how to be sky aware. When the clouds are low and very gray, rain or storms are on the way!

2) Let the little ones help plan for weather emergencies. This could include packing a kit in case the power goes out, explaining why and how the family should go into the basement when the sirens start sounding, and any other means of preparation.

3) Teach them about thunder and lightning. Reassure them that they’re safe inside the house and that you’ll protect them. A parent being honest and conveying confidence can go a long way in helping children gain solace in uncertain situations.

4) If your child is a light sleeper, use a white noise machine, sound machine, or even a fan to block out storm noises. This can be a good idea whether your little bug is afraid of storms or not because thunder or loud rain can interrupt sleep regardless!
