Spring has arrived and summer will be here fast! Beautiful weather means we get to spend more time outside, and our little bugs are ready to go-go-go! Trees, flowers and green grass make for pretty scenery, but their pollen can also cause problems.

If your little bug is having trouble with itchy eyes and skin, or they’re constantly sneezing and coughing, they may be suffering from seasonal allergies. There are a lot of things to know about children’s seasonal allergies, but here are a few quick points:

1) Allergies May Appear Similar To Colds, But There Are Differences

Runny noses, coughing and sore throats are symptoms of the common cold and seasonal allergies. But there are symptoms that are more exclusive to each of them:

  • Fevers and body aches are found in the cold, but not in allergies.
  • Seasonal allergies create itchy eyes and skin rashes, which generally aren’t common with colds.

Learn more about the differences and similarities here.

2) Seasonal Allergies Could Trigger Other Problems

Congestion is no fun, especially when it makes it hard to sleep! But built-up nasal congestion could cause more serious health effects than just being tired.

Over time, congestion could lead to ear infections, pink eye and other problems. Pollen could also trigger asthma for kids who suffer from allergies seasonal allergies. These issues can be tough, so it’s best to talk with an allergist to determine the right way to help your little bug.

3) There Are Remedies Available For Children’s Seasonal Allergies

First, it’s important to note that you should always consult your doctor before giving your child a new medication. If your doctor gives approval, there are a variety of over-the-counter antihistamines, decongestants and other types of medicine. Depending on your child’s age and other factors, they may also be able to get allergy shots.
